Research trials at the Murdoch University laboratory are using radioactively labelled phosphine ( 32 P) to study how grains absorb phosphine and the speed at which the residues disperse... Increasing levels of resistance in insects is resulting in higher levels of phosphine being used, and for longer periods, to ensure all insects are killed, particularly for grain that is exported... "It is extremely important that the Australian grain industry has information on the fate of phosphine in grains to prevent breaches of MRLs, which could jeopardise access to international markets."..

The adult beetle is a rich chestnut colour when newly emerged, but changes to a shiny black, stout bodied beetle approximately 10-15 mm long... Beetles may be present in the soil prior to planting, especially if the land has recently grown pasture... Sowing delayed until November-December when most beetles have died, but before the new generation of beetles emerges in January, may avoid most beetle activity..

avoid surprises when selling stored grain by monitoring for insect pests monthly... Pitfall traps installed in the top of the grain store will show insects are active long before they are seen on the surface of the grain... Protecting any grain stored from insect attack makes economic sense, because even feed grain can lose value though loss of protein or palatability, affecting livestock growth rates...
