Continuous barley produced the highest gross margin when compared with eight other rotations in WA's central wheatbelt... The five-year gross margin of continuous barley was $1706 a hectare, ahead of lupin-wheat-barley-lupin-wheat at $1620/ha (see Figure 1)... But continuous wheat was showing a trend toward lower vigour, yield and protein and higher weed density due to seasonal and disease pressures (see Figure 2)...

Trials show that chickpeas, such as this crop at Emerald, Central Queensland, have the potential to lift yields in subsequent wheat crops... Trials of chickpea/wheat rotations in the Central Queensland grain-growing region show that using chickpeas as a break crop could help growers increase yields, protein levels and profitability in subsequent wheat crops... Results for a trial at 'Wongalee', near Theodore, CQ, showed a huge increase in both the yield and protein content of wheat grown after chickpeas. "..

Research has now identified that crop rotation can have a big influence on the pathogen and disease expression... In trials carried out in four states over four years using a Pythium-selective seed dressing at greater concentrations than commercial products, yield increases of two to 12 per cent were recorded in cereals, five to 25 per cent in canola and five to 35 per cent in pulses... The yield improvements were achieved with only partial disease control...

Break crop study reveals secrets of success.. A study of break crops and rotations used in Western Australia's eastern grainbelt has found that more profitable growers have a thorough understanding of their profit drivers and maintain flexibility in their rotations... Mr McConnell said 70 per cent of the businesses surveyed maintained a sheep flock and all growers with livestock were willing to run a stocking rate lower than average for their region to have the flexibility to manipulate pastures and spray top early...
