Catalogue: GRDC Updates (West)
To date there have been four sites identified with resistant RLEM to frequently used synthetic pyrethroids such as bifenthrin... Cereals, oilseeds and pastures were assessed in separate experiments, each containing replicated check cultivars: P. neglectus susceptible Machete and Brookton wheats, and P. neglectus resistant Tanjil lupin and Kaspa field pea... The lotus, serradella and sulla assessed against medics and biserrula were S...

Western Australian growers who observe redlegged earth mites (RLEM) surviving insecticide treatments are advised to arrange testing for resistance levels... Ms Micic said that from 148 WA properties tested from 2006 to 2012, 29 had been confirmed with RLEM populations resistant to all SPs. ".. Every time an SP is used to control pests such as weevils, caterpillars and aphids, RLEM also receive a dose of this insecticide, despite not necessarily being the primary target," Ms Micic said...

RLEM were collected either by using a suction sampler or by collecting weeds with mites on them from along fencelines... Farmers and agronomists who discover RLEM that survive registered rates of insecticide treatments are encouraged to contact the Department of Agriculture and Food Entomologists where arrangements can be made to have samples of mites tested for their level of resistance...

Testing urged for mite resistance.. Growers who find redlegged earth mites (RLEM) that have survived insecticide treatments are urged to test for resistance and start planning spring control strategies... Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) entomologist Svetlana Micic says WA growers should contact their local DAFWA office if they have had difficulty controlling RLEM this year, as this could indicate resistance to synthetic pyrethroids (SPs - Group 3A) - including bifenthrin and alpha-cypermethrin...

Increasing levels of resistance to several insecticide groups in Western Australian populations of redlegged earth mites (RLEM) has prompted advice for growers to use more strategic control measures this year... The Department of Agriculture and Food, WA (DAFWA) warns there is a rising trend of RLEM resistance to synthetic pyrethroids (SPs/Group 3A) - including bifenthrin and alpha-cypermethrin - in the state's high-rainfall areas... There have also been new discoveries of WA RLEM populations with resistance to the organophosphates (OP/Group 1B) omethoate and chlorpyrifos and RLEM with cross-resistance to OPs and SPs...
