Red-legged earthmites (RLEM) cause millions of dollars of damage to crops each year, and due to a cool start to the growing season causing the pests to hatch in April, now is the time for RLEM control... SARDI entomology researcher Kym Perry says growers should not assume that preventative treatments applied at sowing will be an effective solution against pests... RLEM attacks most crops and feeds on all stages of plants, though is particularly damaging to seedlings in autumn...

Grain growers can use a testing service to determine if insecticide resistance exists in redlegged earth mites on their properties... Growers in the southern grains region are encouraged to use a free redlegged earth mite (RLEM) insecticide-resistance testing service made possible through a national GRDC-funded project led by the University of Melbourne, in collaboration with cesar , the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA), CSIRO and the University of WA... Resistance to synthetic pyrethroids (SPs) is already confirmed in large populations of RLEM across the WA grainbelt, while some populations in WA also have resistance to organophosphates (OPs)...

Chocolate spot is the most important disease of faba beans in Victoria and South Australia... A non-aggressive phase, when discrete reddish-brown spots are "peppered" over the leaves and stems, and then an aggressive phase, when spots darken in colour and coalesce to form larger grey-brown target spots (Figure 2) that may eventually cover the entire plant... Chocolate spot occurs in all areas where faba beans are grown, causing losses ranging from minor to complete failure of a crop...

DAFWA is increasing its testing of mites for resistance to organophosphate insecticides, as well as for resistance to synthetic pyrethroids.. Growers who notice any instances of insecticides failing to control redlegged earth mites (RLEM) this season are encouraged to arrange for the pests to be tested... Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) entomologist Svetlana Micic encouraged growers to notify her if they suspected RLEM had survived registered rates of insecticides, so arrangements could be made to have samples of mites tested for resistance...

Dr Paul Umina from cesar* and the University of Melbourne looks at the worrying rise of chemical resistance in redlegged earth mites in Western Australia - By Dr Paul Umina.. The first demonstrated case of chemical resistance in RLEM was discovered in 2006 in a canola crop north-west of Esperance, Western Australia... It is clear that resistance in RLEM is found across the entire pyrethroid group, which has implications for the management of resistant populations in the field...

Test to take the guess work out of RLEM resistance.. Redlegged earth mites (RLEM) that survive registered rates of insecticide treatments and/or are suspected of being chemically resistant should be tested for resistance levels... Unsprayed and under-grazed pastures in spring are known to be favourable to RLEM, which can produce populations of more than 50,000 mites per square metre - compared to less than 200 mites per square metre in crops where weeds have been controlled...
