"Using the extensive evaluation enables the Blackspot Manager to predict disease on a farm or a catchment basis.".. To account for this, the South Australian Disease Risk model (DIRI) brings together management factors such as the number of years since a pea crop was grown in a specific paddock, variety, the use of seed dressings and rainfall data... "Our model not only allows growers to see the impact of adjusting sowing date on the level of blackspot disease risk, but also of paddock choice and the use or omission of a seed dressing."..

To minimise the development of glyphosate resistance among weeds, the GRDC has been instrumental in developing a working group on the sustainable use of this key herbicide in Australian cropping... The national Glyphosate Sustainability Working Group includes research and industry representatives from the CRC for Australian Weed Management (CRCAWM), Nufarm, Syngenta, Monsanto, Avcare, University of Western Australia"s WA Herbicide Resistance Initiative, NSW Agriculture, Queensland DPI&F, University of Adelaide and Charles Sturt University... The group is chaired by CRCAWM"s Dr Rick Llewellyn, from UWA...

The project aimed to isolate and understand the interplay of genes specifically involved in the regulation of resistance so that the molecular basis of the plant-pathogen interaction (between barley and Rhynchosporium secalis and Pyrenophora teres ) can be understood as a basis for improving disease resistance... In the project, the University of Adelaide focused on candidate genes involved in changes to the cytoskeleton, oxidative signalling, repair of oxidative damage, inhibition of fungal toxins and antioxidant capacity... Results from the project suggest a promising approach for the establishment of durable and broader resistance to a suite of evolving plant pathogens through the use of well-characterised regulatory genes and specific promoters...

Supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA), 14 updates will be held throughout the WA grainbelt... GRDC western regional panel chairman Peter Roberts said information presented at the updates could help growers become better informed on ways to boost profitability on-farm, in a sustainable manner... "The events allow information from researchers to reach growers quickly, giving growers the opportunity to consider how results can be applied on their own farms."..

NVT committees break new ground.. "NVT Advisory Committees have been established across the agro-ecological zones of Australia to ensure rigour and relevance to the GRDC-funded NVT program," Mr Giles said... They will determine distribution of site locations, development and confirmation of local sowing windows, confirmation of canola maturity groups for locations, commercial relevance of varieties in the trials and the identification of local benchmark varieties on which to base management decisions, Mr Giles said...

Soil testing can be used to assess the likely nutrient constraints, but soil testing and soil test interpretation is not a precise science... To summarise a number of trial results, some sites had consistent increases in crop growth for crop-after-crop; others were more hit-and-miss... Nutrient rates used are 40 kg P (MAP or a fluid source), 200 kg K (SOP or MOP), and 40-80 kg S (SOA or ATS), with the high application rates designed to allow impacts to be followed through an extended crop rotation...
