KEYMESSAGES While resistance in annual ryegrass is common throughout the wheatbelt, resistance to some herbicides like glyphosate or paraquat/diquat is still rare in WA... Safeguard ryegrass could be used to increase the density of ryegrass in the following year, as it is susceptible to glyphosate (and resistant to ARGT)... In total, detailed dose response experiments were conducted on 25 populations of annual ryegrass that were suspected of being resistant to glyphosate... Dose response experiments examining populations with different resistance mechanisms showed that the target site mutation in SLR 77 resulted in a population that is less resistant to glyphosate compared with populations containing the reduced translocation mechanism, such as NLR 70... Using a knockdown rotation of the double knock in one year and glyphosate alone in the next year is predicted to result in glyphosate resistance occurring after 26 years for the translocation mechanism and more than 40 years for the target site mechanism (Figure 20)..

Dr Doug Sammons, a senior fellow at Monsanto in St Louis, Missouri, in the US, stirred considerable interest when he revealed a new technology called BioDirect , which appears to have the potential to reverse weed resistance... An example the company is exploring is the reversal of glyphosate resistance in Palmer amaranth ( Amaranthus palmeri ), a weed that has become a major problem in the US because of its ability to resist multiple herbicide groups... Paddock trials have also been done on Palmer amaranth weeds that were able to tolerate up to 16 times the label rate of glyphosate in some highly resistant fields, and enhanced control of even these weeds was seen through the application of BioDirect technology combined with glyphosate...
