There are a range of products and services to help with in-season decision making: simple historic rainfall and temperature deciles, such as Rainmain or CliMate; seasonal forecasting, such as SOI, IOD and ENSO; short term weather forecasts (a large range of websites and apps available); yield prediction tools and newsletters, such as Yield Prophet, Hart Beat, The Break; and soil moisture probes... Further to the products, growers also have the ability to make variable rate input decisions based on paddock spatial variation through crop sensors mounted on tractors, satellite photos or other images collected from planes or UAVs and drones...

Grain growers using raised bed systems in Australia's high rainfall zone (HRZ) stand to benefit financially and environmentally from better management of water and nutrients on-farm... A Victoria Department of Primary Industries (DPIV) research scientist has found that farmers can potentially reduce their application of fertiliser by 30 per cent in raised bed systems, saving money and minimising the amount of nutrients lost in runoff... Mr Johnston expects a resurgence in raised bed cropping as high rainfall zones return to a more predictable wet weather pattern, and says it's critical that farmers comply with best practice methods to make the economic gains and minimise their effect on the environment...

Modelling the risks involved with splitting N application at Bellata over a number of years.. Current best nitrogen management practice is generally to assess soil water and soil nitrogen levels before sowing, estimate yield potential and fertilise all prior to, or at, sowing because it is too risky to apply in-crop... There is a large decrease in frequency from one to two rainfall events, suggesting growers would need to be very organised and be able to respond in a short time frame to take advantage of incrop N application opportunities...

Most farmers in the region would prefer to then apply their nitrogen to soils with a full moisture profile to maximise the benefit to the crop of their fertiliser investment... The decision will have to be made sooner for some than others - many growers ordered urea six months ago when prices were low; they now need to decide whether to accept those orders and apply their usual rate to their full farming area, or let those early orders go and take more expensive product when it does decide to rain... The upside of applying nitrogen in dry conditions is that it will remain in the soil until activated by rainfall and infiltrate down the profile, whereas applying fertiliser N to a full moisture profile can lead to high gaseous losses through ammonia volatilisation and denitrification in the event of further heavy rainfall and waterlogging as it has nowhere to go...

Summer rainfall in excess of 25-30 mm in a single event is usually stored in the subsoil, so a rainfall event of 100 mm would leave about 70 mm in the soil... Rainfall events smaller than 25 mm are generally completely evaporated prior to sowing... Residue management has little impact on stored soil water at sowing...
