Queensland University of Technology's Professor Peter Grace discusses strategies to help avoid nitrogen losses at a recent GRDC Grains Research Update... The loss is caused by chemical reactions on the surface of the soil, and only occurs in alkaline soils when ammonium-based fertiliser is broadcast and there is no rain to wash it into the soil... Rain is required to wash the fertiliser deeper into the soil profile, but not too much that it could cause denitrification or leaching...

In Western Australia, late but steady rain turned a frightening start into a bumper season, particularly for wheat and canola... The above photograph by Evan Collis was taken on the 4000-hectare Dowerin property of Andrew Todd, who says 2013 began with the driest start on record for his area 170 kilometres north-east of Perth... In terms of lessons to take into 2014, Andrew says the season proved once again that "time of sowing is king"...

Clay and spading helps rebuild non-wetting soils.. On 19 July 2010, after about 78mm of rain, the nil treatment (Figure 1) had a lower plant density and went on to yield 0.66t/ha, while the 260t/ha of clay incorporated by spading plot (Figure 2) had a high plant density and went on to yield 1.41t/ha... In 2010 Trevor had electromagnetic surveys (EM38), gamma-ray spectrometry (radiometrics) and deep soil analysis done for measuring and mapping the depth to clay and he used these maps in 2011 to strictly apply clay only where it was needed...

Three sets of plant samples of the same variety, showing Charcoal Rot (reddish-purple-black stems), Water Stress (pale, white stems) and Full Water (healthy green stems)... Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supported research suggests that black layer (abscission layer) formation in the field is the best tool to safely schedule spray-out timing as it can help growers determine their risk approach and modify it as needed on a paddock and variety basis... When spraying, Mr McIntosh said growers needed to ensure that application was carried out in the prime time of day, usually early morning when stomates are open; ensure water quality was good, water volume adequate and adhere to seven days withholding period...

Demise of wet autumns drives new farming system.. John was working in London as an accountant 18 years ago when the phone call came through from his father, a farmer from the wheatbelt at Piawaning... John has experimented with a number of solutions, with some success: "There's claying, which involves finding suitable clay in the area, digging it up, spreading and incorporating it into the surface," he says. "..

CliMate app to help put a handle on the weather.. The app can provide three types of answers based on long-term and recent weather data: the probability of future events based on long-term data; the probability of future events based on El Ni o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) forecasts; and the current status of the system, such as the soil water and heat sum, based on real-time data from the nearest climate station... Dr Freebairn says that creating an app was somewhat risky because he had not developed for that platform before. "..

Severe climate swings hastening a move to CTF.. The start of the decade saw long dry spells and, as a consequence, significantly reduced oat yields and hectolitre weight... Mark says that last year in paddocks with light, sandy soil the header left deep, compacted wheel tracks...
