"Results from the project suggest that trying to increase wheat protein with late foliar N application is unlikely to be a very effective management tool in areas where spring rainfall is highly erratic," he said... Although the late foliar application of N can deliver significant increases in protein, it is unlikely to deliver an economic benefit unless grain N recovery rates are high, untreated protein levels are close to a receival grade threshold and the premium between receival grades is at least $20/t," he said... "In terms of application, multiple low rate application in the 2014 trials did not appear to improve the response compared to the same rate applied in one application...

Soils across the northern region are sending a clear message to growers - good seasons and flood events have depleted soil fertility and exhausted soil mineral nitrogen reserves built up during dry seasons of the mid-2000s... Dr Dowling says long term declines in soil fertility came together with short term seasonal conditions to take growers by surprise last year when protein levels came in lower than expected... Dr Dowling says the "set and forget" nitrogen strategy may need to be reviewed as the season progresses to ensure the crop has enough nitrogen to finish well...

Early planning the key to fertiliser impact.. Maximising crop yield rather than focusing on protein levels should be the first goal for northern region grain growers when planning their fertiliser strategy, according to Bede O'Mara,.. "Don't forget about your pests and diseases - make sure you understand your nematode levels pre-plant and also your crown rot levels which have a large bearing on your success and uptake ability with nitrogen."..

Drew Penberthy, Crown Analytical Services (CAS) and Penagcon and Rob Long, CAS and B&W Rural, Moree, NSW organised the information day and say good attendance was testament to the impact of the issues... "Nematodes, crown rot and lower protein levels impacted on yield and profits in the 2012 season, which was characterised by a wet start, particularly cold and wet July and then virtually no rain," Mr Long said... Crown Analytical Services manages Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)-funded research trials into crown rot in the Moree district and Mr Long says the disease became an issue as conditions dried out late in the season...
