Research is required to understand the question of temporal stability in patterns of spatial variation in grain protein... In the course of this project, a collaboration was established with Viterra which is interested in selective harvesting both as a means of gaining greater control over the characteristics of parcels of barley sent for malting, and also on the basis that a parcel of grain with a narrow range of variation in protein content is more highly regarded than one with a wide range... Given the poor performance of the protein sensors, these results do not disprove the concept either...

GA will conduct research aiming to deliver useful molecular markers to wheat and barley breeders in Australia, specifically in the areas of improved resistance to biotic stresses in wheat and barley and improved end-use quality in wheat... The Project Supervisors (D. Mather and K. Chalmers) will have overall responsibility for the project and direct responsibility for molecular work, information management and project..... The regional and national role of grains research in South Australia was profiled over a three-day tour by the GRDC's National Panel in late June < Keep browsing..

Each year the GRDC invests millions of dollars in research, development, skills and capacity building projects, and a new overview of these investments summarises projects active in 2013/2014... The summaries outlining projects designed to help drive the production capacity and profitability of Australian growers can be found at www.grdc.com.au/ProjectSummaries ... "Contained within six volumes and comprising a total of more than 700 pages, the summaries have been written by research partners and cover six key themes - meeting market requirements, improving crop yield, protecting your crop, advancing profitable farming systems, improving your farm resource base and building skills and capacity."..

Resource offers guidance on successful mixed farming.. The GRDC's investments in mixed farming aim to provide growers with practical solutions to some of the challenges faced by running modern stock and cropping systems across the same farm, while dealing with a changing climate... The Low Rainfall Collaboration Project (LRCP) improved the capacity of farming systems (FS) groups in south-eastern Australia (Eyre Peninsula FS, Upper North FS, Mallee Sustainable Farming, Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) and Central West FS) by fostering greater sharing of knowledge and ideas and providing expertise and operating guidelines... The majority of outcomes in this area were achieved indirectly through the increased capacity of the five FS groups which this project supported... The low rainfall areas have enormous untapped potential for improvement in productivity and sustainability...

KEYMESSAGES Research, development & extension (RD&E) partners need to develop a greater understanding of what grower groups can offer and how they operate, and vice versa... The role of a grower group in a project, and if it is in partnering or outsourcing, should be considered... Outsourcing work to a grower group is not a partnership, and if using groups in this way, for example to run events, survey their members on your behalf or become extensions of project staff, they should be fairly compensated...

In a recent survey 96% of growers indicated their knowledge about soil health had increased as a result of this project; 94% indicated they were better at making decisions for their business regarding soil health and 91% indicated information from the Liebe Group had been useful for changing farm practices... Professor Daniel Murphy, of UWA, analysed results from the Liebe Group's long term Soil Biology Trial, which has been measuring soil organic carbon build up since 2003, and the results of this analysis have provided growers with an indication of realistic soil organic carbon levels that can be targeted... Seven fact sheets about soil amelioration have been produced. . They contain concise and practical information to be used as starting points for growers investigating soil amelioration options...

Through the project, and other work by the Liebe Group, growers were able to review their fertiliser use, understand plant nutrition and recognise the need to protect gross margins and reduce their financial risks in a variable climate... Through previous research conducted in the area, there was an understanding that growers could improve their systems by optimising time of sowing, managing soil types more effectively, increasing their understanding of crop N use and better understanding soil water dynamics to make more informed and flexible decisions as seasons unfold... The short term objective of the project was to deliver quality information to growers and industry about adaptation options...
