In the project, the project team identified wheat germplasm with significant abiotic stress tolerance, in particular drought and resistance to biotic stresses and insect pests... The project leveraged on existing research network established by ICARDA with INRA, Morocco, EIAR, Ethiopia and ARC, Sudan which made substantial contributions to the project outputs...

Durum production in the southern region fell in the lead-up to this project... Samples from affected trials have been sent to a DNA laboratory for a quantitative assessment of fungal DNA. Irrespective of the mechanism, this germplasm appears to represent an improvement in field performance under disease pressure... Further research is required to complete this study and develop a more precise understanding of how the environment affects yellow pigment content...

Uncertainty about the effects of rising atmospheric CO 2 levels on crop growth, water use, grain yield and quality led to field experiments being conducted in the Australian grain belt to obtain data on the response of wheat crops to elevated carbon dioxide levels... The collaborative project between the Victorian Department of Primary Industries (Vic DPI) and the University of Melbourne (UM) delivered a national Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) facility consisting of a core of 8 x 12 m rings at Horsham, supplemented by a smaller system at Walpeup (Mallee), within a region of strategic importance to the grains industry... The results from this type of research can inform crop breeders about traits responsive to eCO 2 and provide them with information to improve future lines of wheat...
