Simon Falkiner, of FalkinerAg, consults to SFS and says the project, established in 2011, has helped growers overcome the challenge of working with a cropping system inherited from north of the Great Dividing Range... GA will conduct research aiming to deliver useful molecular markers to wheat and barley breeders in Australia, specifically in the areas of improved resistance to biotic stresses in wheat and barley and improved end-use quality in wheat... Australian wheat and barley breeders, already international leaders in the adoption of molecular technology in plant breeding, need new and better marker tools to help them develop varieties with the combinations of traits that will be needed in future markets and environments... By adopting the outputs of this project the Australian wheat and barley breeding sector will be better positioned to develop varieties that combine high yield with disease resistance and the quality attributes needed to keep the Australian grains industry internationally competitive...

The current project provided an extra period of time to continue this process and extend the outcome to a wider audience through participation in workshops, field days and farmer updates... As the project has achieved its aim of deriving and subsequently offering some solutions to a wide audience of farmers, advisers and researchers over a considerable period of time, there is no need for it to continue... As the project was an extension of the previously reported project ACR4, the expected outcome is as previously reported for that project with an extension of the message to a further audience in excess of 600 including 586 farmers from Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales...
