Mallee Sustainable Farming's Michael Moodie says trials at Ouyen and Minnipa found using hybrid canola seed did not boost yields in the low rainfall zone.. Mallee Sustainable Farming agronomist Michael Moodie said while growers in the Mallee have found canola can bring benefits as a break crop, the trial was conducted to investigate risks associated with the crop... Trials were conducted at Ouyen and at Minnipa on the Eyre Peninsula, with treatments including time of sowing, variety and timing of nitrogen application...

WA growers are this year being urged to test redlegged earth mites (RLEM) that survive insecticide treatments... As part of a GRDC-funded national project, CSIRO and Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA) researchers will this year continue to test properties across the State where RLEM are found to survive insecticide treatments... If RLEM survive registered rates of insecticide treatments, or there is suspicion that mites resistant to chemicals are present on a property, contact DAFWA's broadacre entomologists to have mites sampled and tested...

NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) staff involved in the National Soybean Breeding Program have launched a push to encourage more farmers to grow soybeans as a food crop for people... Mostly grown in Australia as a "break" crop, using no-till cultivation, soybeans have been used to recycle nitrogen and improve sustainability of a farmer"s principal crop... Soybeans are grown in Australia in three farming systems - dominated by sugarcane, perennial pasture and rice...

Research sheds light on Rhizoctonia control.. Research sheds light on Rhizoctonia control The use of break crops significantly reduces Rhizoctonia inoculum levels, but this beneficial effect lasts only until the end of the following cereal crop... The lower levels are maintained through to the end of the next summer reducing the risk of Rhizoctonia damage to the crop grown in the year following the break crop. "..

Sow the following wheat crop directly over the row of the previous year's break crop... "Crop rotation reduces the incidence and severity of crown rot, resulting in yield gains of 17-23pc over continuous wheat," Dr Verrell said... "By following these two rules it ensures four years occur between wheat crops being sown in the same row space and reduces the incidence of crown rot in wheat crops," Dr Verrell said...

Recent flooding has reinforced southern Queensland grower Luke Arbuckle's commitment to creating a risk-resilient enterprise using twin-sowing and input control... Their 4653-hectare property received 140 millimetres of rain and their 3439ha property received 90mm... In addition to wheat and chickpeas, Luke has grown canola and mustard seed crops for their high market value and benefits as break crops, although so far sorghum and mungbeans have proven difficult to grow in the Arbuckles' farming system...

The paper aims to examine some of the knowledge gained recently from Grain & Graze activities and look at the current issues and future direction that these crops may take - not only within the crop rotation but also the farming system.. In a year such as 2011 summer rains were generally well in excess of crop requirements and our results show little difference in soil moisture levels following summer crops... A recent survey conducted by the author of approx 20 growers and agronomists in south western Victoria, who had been active with alternate break crops over a number of years, highlighted that there are three principle areas of consideration that help determine the appropriate break crop for a given situation..
