"There are no magic bullets when it comes to pre-emergent spraying," said Mr Gordon, of Bill Gordon Consulting, Lawrence, NSW. ".. Getting a good result is about doing all of the little things well, from product selection to match the weed spectrum present, through to monitoring the spray results carefully.".. To assist growers with the spraying programs, Mr Gordon emphasised the importance of the basic elements, the three Ts: The target "Know your target - it is critical to ensure that the product selected is the most appropriate for the weeds present and the situation," Mr Gordon said...

Advice concerning the significance and control of the more common pests, or potential pests, of these crops is presented... Value of the crop (high value crops cannot sustain too much damage as a small loss in yield or quality could mean a large financial loss), the cost of the spray and its application and the likely yield or quality benefit gained from control... Crop monitoring Ongoing monitoring of crops and surrounding vegetation is essential to determine the presence of both pests and predators, and when, if any, intervention is required to keep pests at an acceptable level or, if feasible, boost predator numbers by introducing them into the system...

if a product has 'curative' properties, often the best result will be achieved by ensuring sprays not only reach the plant parts requiring protection (such as new growth), but also the source of the infection (which may be on lower parts of the plant)... Ways of maintaining spray quality include: using nozzles that produce the same spray quality throughout their pressure range; using systems that maintain droplet size, such as pulse width modulation (for example, the aim command system); and using controller functions such as the minimum hold or lower limit to prevent excessive pressure drops when reducing speed while ensuring overdosing is minimised... often i want to apply a herbicide at the same time as a fungicide or insecticide...
