Biosecurity strengthens weed control.. Problem weeds have been a major driver behind his biosecurity practices, including spiny burrgrass, St Barnaby's thistle, feathertop Rhodes grass and silver-leaf nightshade... Rodney has successfully eradicated spiny burrgrass and silver-leaf nightshade on his farm, and continues to employ several practices to ensure freedom from such weeds is maintained...

Southern and central New South Wales grains advisers and growers are encouraged to attend workshops to improve management of problem weeds for enhanced cropping options and profits... The workshops in March will enable participants to discuss their weed management experiences with peers and industry experts and will assist in the development of strategies for tackling problem paddocks and particular weeds... Run in conjunction with the GRDC-supported WeedSmart initiative, the workshops will feature input from Western Australian weeds specialist Peter Newman, along with Tony Cook (New South Wales Department of Primary Industries), John Cameron (Independent Consultants Australia Network) and leading growers Rod Messina (WA) and Murray Scholtz (Culcairn, NSW)...

New wheat changes weed management options.. James Clark, Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) northern panel chair said Elmore CL Plus , a new Clearfield wheat released by Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) gives growers another tool to combat problem weeds... "There is a discount in moving from a prime hard to hard variety but it may be worth it for the opportunity to reset the system, control weeds and use residual chemicals in the fallow, a practice that would normally lock growers out of wheat that year," he said...

Mr Storrie says 82 confirmed cases of glyphosate-resistant annual ryegrass have been recorded in winter grain crops including wheat, canola and pulses from NSW to Western Australia. ".. This is the tip of the iceberg, as our most valuable herbicide, glyphosate, has been used for long enough to prime weed populations for resistance," Mr Storrie said. ".. If there is ryegrass still alive after two applications of glyphosate in a canola crop, you have a fair indication they are resistant, but it is a good idea to get a Quick-test@" done as well for suspected problem weeds from other crops and fallows," Mr Storrie said...

integrated weed management relies on a range of tactics, both chemical and non-chemical, and multiple attacks to keep weeds successfully in check... recent surveys have shown that ryegrass numbers in paddocks are very low, even where herbicide resistance has been recorded... crop competition Crop competition is driven by crop type and variety choice and works by using crop uniformity, density, vigour and good agronomy to outcompete weeds...

Fleabane is considered an important weed of reduced cultivation systems, from Western Australia to Emerald... Due to the increased prevalence of fleabane, costs of weed control in northern fallows have doubled in the last 10 years for many..... Keeping on top of fleabane - in-crop strategies, the role and impact of residual herbicides, crop competition and double-knock..

Highly respected throughout the Australian weed scientists' community, the team conducts valuable research into best-practice weed management for central and southern Queensland agriculture, weed ecology and the safe use of herbicides in crops... Over the past decade, the team has quantified risks associated with the development of herbicide resistance in weeds of the northern grain region, and has made recommendations for avoiding and managing weed populations resistant to important herbicides... Unlike previous models produced in other parts of Australia, the model enables simulation of a wide variety of weed species, agronomic practices, and weed control tactics, to help understand and explain the impact of agricultural decision making on the rate of evolution of herbicide resistance...
