Dr Masakazu Kodaira, from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, with results from the on-the-go soil sampler that uses near-infrared reflectance to measure 19 soil parameters including key macro and micronutrients... Dr Chunjiang Zhao, director of the National Engineering Research Center for Information Technology in Agriculture, reported that the annual investment in China in precision agriculture research is about US$66 million (A$70 million)... Technology to provide traceability through the food chain as well as non-destructive sensors to measure product quality before going to market were areas of interest presented by Dr Sakae Shibusawa, professor of agriculture and technology at Tokyo University...

" Date: 18.01.2016 pH maps cut the cost of tackling soil acidity.. Victorian grower Evan Lewis expects to reduce his expenditure on lime by almost 70 per cent this year through the use of variable-rate technology... Compared with a blanket lime rate of 2.5 tonnes per hectare applied across the Lewis family's property for 13 years, pH mapping will enable Evan to tackle the acidic and sodic imbalance in his soils with lime rates ranging from just 1.2 to 2.1t/ha in 2016...

As you will see from this Groundcover liftout, the GRDC has established a national R&D initiative to further develop Precision Agriculture (PA) methods, and to test and demonstrate how growers can use them to improve profit and sustainability... As a part of this work, we would like to get a better understanding of how many growers are using PA, what the main barriers to adoption are, what are the areas where improvements are needed, and how you would like to obtain information about this PA research and its findings... We intend to repeat this survey at or after the completion of this Initiative as one way of evaluating its effectiveness...

A detailed manual on precision agriculture is the latest addition to the revamped Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) website, Tom McCue, GRDC manager extension and grower programs said growers and advisers can use the manual to design onfarm experiments and research standards for electromagnetic induction mapping in the grains industry. ".. The manual is an invaluable resource for growers already using precision agriculture technology and is the best place to start for those considering PA," Mr McCue said. ".. To view the manual, visit www.grdc.com.au/pamanual..

It is important to remember that there are many ways in which PA can be adopted and used to make or save money, improve timeliness or environmental management and to carry out onfarm trials... If a grower purchases a GPS unit using one system and then changes to one using the other system, locations will not be translate accurately... Growers are not confident in using the currently available indices in making cropping decisions...
