Image of the Harrington Seed Destructor.. De Bruin Engineering's Harrington Seed Destructor (HSD), designed and manufactured in Australia, has been recognised on the world stage, winning the 2015 Edison Award in the US in the 'Smart Agriculture' category... Key findings include: 69 per cent of surveyed growers use a combination of methods to pick the right time to sell, while 31 per cent take the price on offer; women are more willing to try new approaches (42 per cent of women versus 38 per cent of men) and they are also more likely to adjust practices in response to the market (64 per cent versus 60 per cent); and 69 per cent of growers say maximising production and quality is the most important profitability driver; 31 per cent say managing costs is most important...

Research by the Western Australian No-Tillage Farmers Association (WANTFA) shows effective use of pre-emergent herbicides when sowing wheat early in dry conditions can help the crop out-compete weeds and lift yields... Dr Minkey says the research indicated that Sakura and Boxer Gold helped control weeds when wheat was dry-seeded early, but the effectiveness of trifluralin was limited on heavy soils. ".. Overall, Sakura was the most effective in controlling germination of annual ryegrass in both early and late-sown wheat," Dr Minkey says...

The aim of the study was to investigate weed management with pre-emergent herbicides and weed seed harvest management under a dry seeded wheat system... In a UWA trial located nearby results did show a small reduction in emergence from windrow burning and the HSD (Mike Walsh, personal communication)... WANTFA would like to acknowledge the Rural Industries Development Corporation (RIRDC), the National Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative (NAMI) funded by the Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia, the Grains Research and Development Corporation and the Australian Government's Climate Change Research Program for funding the work...
