The previous projects (phase I - III) highlighted that NR wheat & barley cultivars differed considerable in their sensitivity to herbicides... We found this by testing 38 and 15 NR varieties of wheat and barley with 33 and 19 registered herbicides, a wide range of varieties with new herbicides, and advance breeding lines with a standard set of commonly used herbicides... The new project will focus on increased screening of advanced wheat lines to a range of commonly used herbicides,.....

One or more species of RLN (Root Lesion Nematode, Pratylenchus spp.) occur in at least 60% of WA cropping paddocks... The principal outputs of this project will be knowledge of wheat varieties which are more resistant to RLN (i.e. limit the multiplication of RLN under a crop) & more tolerant to RLN (i.e. yield loss incurred in a variety due to RLN is minimised)... RLN research in WA will continue to focus on management, principally through rotational recommendations for the deployment of cereal cultivars (& other host crops) with a level of resistance to each RLN that will benefit subsequent crop yields...

P. thornei occurs rarely; P. neglectus is the most frequent RLN identified in WA, occurring in at least 40% of paddocks; P. teres is found in 10% of paddocks... It is imperative that the species of RLN is correctly identified to enable growers to deploy appropriate crop varieties and species to minimise current and future losses...

Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) causes significant losses to wheat especially in North America... We have new molecular markers (tags) for one resistance needing validation, and in collaboration with North American colleagues, we plan to develop a marker for at least one of the other resistances... Once we have the three resistances in Australian wheat backgrounds it is important to confirm that the presence of the resistances has no detrimental effect on grain quality or on yield in the absence of WSMV disease...
