When sowing to wheat or another cereal in a paddock with a previous history of Rhizoctonia bare-patch, using cultivation below the seed (~10 cm) and a registered fungicide can reduce disease impact... A break crop of canola or a chemical fallow may be useful for reducing Rhizoctonia inoculum in the soil prior to sowing a cereal crop... EverGol Prime and Vibrance have been evaluated as seed treatments to suppress Rhizoctonia in field trials conducted by DAFWA and SARDI in 2011 and 2012 (Table 1)...

FINAL REPORT DAW00032: Improving weed management with biserrula in the pasture phase of WA cropping systems - Dr Clinton Revell, DAFWA.. In October, the biserrula treatment had higher legume content (FOO and % of total) than the other treatments except for the subclover treatment, which had a non-significant difference in the legume % (Table 10)... At the end of the growing season in 2003 there appeared to be preferential grazing by the sheep resulting in the biserrula-based pasture having the highest legume content and lowest grass and broadleaf content...

A trial in Western Australia's northern grainbelt has confirmed that narrow row spacing can boost wheat yields while acting as an important non-herbicide tactic to out-compete weeds... "Results from this trial and previous research suggests that farmers will benefit from using the narrowest row spacing practical, and I believe this should be a consideration if they are thinking about upgrading machinery," researcher Peter Newman said... Mr Newman, a communications leader with the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative (AHRI) and based at Planfarm, coordinated the trial funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and supported by the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA)...

Canola planted after pastures had higher numbers of pests and beneficial invertebrates... Canola planted after a cereal crop had the lowest number of redlegged earth mites, but had higher numbers of Balaustium mite and blue oat mite, than canola planted after other crop species... We observed that invertebrate species that are influenced by stubble retention practices such as bronzed field beetle, earwigs, were in higher numbers under crop residues than where stubble was absent...

Varieties listed in the paper are covered by PBR Background This trial forms part of a continued GRDC funded tri-state project (DAV00138, previously DAV00104) involving NSW DPI and SARDI... Recovery from locust grazing was poor, as a result, the emergence and biomass data collected from the affected plots was removed from the analysis... At Culgoa, delaying N until mid-tillering increased grain yields of each variety compared with if it was applied at sowing (P=0.002, LSD 0.26t/ha, c.v. 5.7%) (Figure 5)...

P4/S9 and P2/S4 were the two most profitable sequences and, overall, the 'maximum profit - P4' philosophy had the highest mean gross margin... It is logical that those growers that have chosen to have no livestock will have no interest in trialling grazing crops... Overall, the data has indicated that for the biserrula inoculant all of the carrier's have difficulties in carrying enough live rhizobia numbers to adequately nodulate the legume hosts after 3-4 months of dry, hot soil...

Final Report DAW00032: Improving weed management with biserrula in the pasture phase of WA cropping.. Casbah will persist through several years of crop has accumulated since the first experiments were conducted with this species in 1995-97, we have little hard data from controlled experiments to document and quantify this aspect of its performance... Using a novel system for estimating rhizobial numbers, where all three legumes are grown together in 100 ml vials, the Centre for Rhizobial Studies (CRS) followed rhizobial numbers in all plots in 2005 and in all rhizospheres for all species in the experiment...
