The work will characterise PUE of a diverse range of wheat and barley varieties in the field to identify germplasm with consistently high PUE... The aim of the project is to assess the level of genetic variation in response to phosphorus fertiliser in wheat and barley and to provide plant breeders with the information and genetic tools to improve phosphorus use efficiency of cereals... There are three outputs from this project: (i) it will characterise the response to phosphorus among a large number of varieties of wheat and barley; (ii) it will provide detailed analysis of the reasons why varieties show different response to phosphorus fertiliser and how this relates to their phosphorus use effciency and (iii) through genetic studies it will aim to provide plant breeders with tools to make the selection for phosphorus use effciency easier...

The work will characterise PUE of a diverse range of wheat and barley varieties in the field to identify germplasm with consistently high PUE... The naturally-low levels of soil phosphorus over large areas of Australia?s cropping zone necessitate regular applications of phosphorus fertiliser to sustain productivity... The aim of the project is to assess the level of genetic variation in response to phosphorus fertiliser in wheat and barley and to provide plant breeders with the information and genetic tools to improve phosphorus use efficiency of cereals...
