From minor pest to high-risk species, strong resistance to phosphine has propelled the rusty grain beetle to the top of the stored grain research priorities.. Researcher Dr Manoj Nayak says that under the current label rates, phosphine applied at 720 parts per million, at 25 C, will kill all other species of strongly resistant stored-grain insects within eight days... Dr Daglish says the newly developed lures were used to trap beetles in a trial in Queensland, and the insects were then raised in optimal conditions to test their longevity...

Stored grain: New fumigant to secure clean grain phosphine.. A joint partnership between CSIRO and the GRDC is setting up alternatives to phosphine fumigation and chemicals facing environmental phase-outs By Melissa Marino and Rebecca Thyer In what was mostly a grim year for the grains industry in 2006, some good news has arrived in the perennial battle to control stored grain insect pests, with researchers developing an environmentally safe and easy-to-use alternative to phosphine... The Stop brochure, designed to remind growers that safe and efficient use of the grain fumigant phosphine is essential, is being distributed alongside phosphine at points of sale around Australia... "Phosphine is widely used in the Australian grain industry because it is cost-effective, much cheaper than any alternative control measures, leaves no residue if used properly and is practically effective," project manager Peter Hughes said... "It is critically important that growers implement best practice when storing grain, particularly in relation to fumigation," said Peter Botta, grain storage specialist for southern New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania... To control pests at all life stages and prevent resistance, phosphine gas concentration needs to reach 300 parts per million (ppm) for seven days (when grain is above 25C) or 200ppm for 10 days (between 15-25C)... The withholding period is two days after ventilation the total fumigation process requires seven to 10 days...

" Date: 06.03.2012 Grain checks equal grain cheques!.. Grain checks equal grain cheques!.. Some farmers get their grain into the silo and breathe a sigh of relief, but it does have to be carefully looked after in storage or you can do your dough, not to mention waste the efforts of harvest," Mr Botta said.
