The research has been conducted across the mid north of South Australia to determine if new and existing varieties of barley vary in tolerance to commonly used herbicides.. The sensitivity of the variety is summarised, using the following symbols based on the yield responses across all trials: (z) no significant yield reductions at higher than recommended rates in (z) trials N (w/z) narrow margin, significant yield reductions at higher than recommended rate, but not tested at recommended rate significant event occurring w years out of z years tested... All pesticide applications must accord with the currently regisetered label for that particular pesticide, crop, pest and region...

Preliminary evaluation entries from previous years that have experienced narrow margin % yield reductions at higher than recommended rate are 'Advanced' to these trials for closer evaluation... The sensitivity of the variety is summarised, using the following symbols based on the yield responses across all trials: - not tested or only tested at higher than recommended rate (Please check Preliminary Evaluation tables) no significant yield reductions at recommended rates or higher than recommended rates in (Z) trials N (narrow margin) significant yield reductions at higher than recommended rate in 1+ trials, but not at recommended rate x% yield reduction (warning) significant yield reduction at recommended rate in 1 trial only x-y% yield reductions (warning) significant yield reductions at recommended rate in 2+ trials.. It must be emphasised that crop tolerance and yield responses to herbicides are strongly influenced by seasonal conditions...

Our surveys have shown that WCMs are typically found wherever wheat is grown... The distribution of balaustium and bryobia mites has been completed throughout southern Australia (WA, SA, Vic and NSW)... The results suggest that omethoate and chlorpyrifos will be the most effective broad-spectrum pesticides for control of bryobia mites, although problems are likely to occur for other registered pesticides...

" Core DRT Database to Support the Ground Application of Pesticides (boom sprayer), accommodating Nozzles, Formulations and Adjuvants.. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) recently implemented new policy requiring new pesticides to be assessed for the potential risk of spray drift, but has indicated that it will consider submission of further data by stakeholders to develop a drift reduction factor model, incorporating the use of new technology low drift spray nozzles, shrouds and spray additives... With pesticides accounting for up to 30 per cent of the variable input costs of grain production, ensuring spray operations are effective and that drift is minimised will save money and time...

GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair David Shannon says the service is of particular value when pest issues emerge during the winter growing season and when prompt identification and circulation of advisory information is required... "PestFacts subscribers provide pest reports and field observations on the appearance and distribution of invertebrate pests across south-eastern Australia," Mr Shannon said... Mr Shannon said being informed and alerted by signing up to the PestFacts service should be a priority for growers and advisers...

I am the principle spray operator and, like the vast majority of broad acre farmers, I regularly apply pesticides including herbicides, insecticides and fungicides to control weeds, insects and crop disease... Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to control weeds, insects and crop disease, reducing labour, energy and water requirements, and optimising potential crop yield and ultimately farm income... The overall objective of the project was to promote the adoption of the best practice spray application process by engaging key stakeholders (including government, chemical and spray applicator manufacturers, researchers, farmers and spray operators) and by applying principles from around the world on ways to simplify pesticide application whilst maximising pesticide efficacy and field efficiency, and sustaining the environment...

The research has been conducted across regional NSW to determine if new and existing varieties of canola vary in tolerance to commonly used herbicides... The sensitivity of the variety is summarised, using the following symbols based on the yield responses across all trials: - not tested or insufficient data no significant yield reductions at recommended rates or higher than recommended rates in 2+ trials N (narrow margin) significant yield reductions at higher than recommended rate in 1+ trials, but not at recommended rate x% yield reduction (warning) significant yield reduction at recommended rate in 1 trial only x-y% yield reductions (warning) significant yield reductions at recommended rate in 2+ trials.. The particular directive includes a requirement that treated drinking water should not have more than a total content of pesticides of 0.5 parts per billion (measured as milligrams/litre) and that an individual active substance should not exceed 0.1 parts per billion... The new lists contain pesticides whose movement to water that is more under the control of the farmer... Good practice for sprayer filling/emptying/cleaning and minimising erosion and spray drift could avoid further withdrawals of designated priority substances...

As farmers today I believe we are making some decisions that may lead to increased drift risk... The APVMA direction is placing more pressure on the person applying the pesticide by requiring the applicator to conduct a risk assessment on sprayer set up, the weather conditions and the surrounding downwind environment and to ultimately decide to spray or not... If we are to maintain market access in these markets, we must be looking at these changes and trends with a view to develop a self regulated practical approach to reduce the need for further regulations...

The research has been conducted across the Victorian Mallee to determine if new and existing varieties of wheat vary in tolerance to commonly used herbicides.. Preliminary Evaluation - herbicides applied at greater than recommended rates to identify cultivar herbicide combinations which may lead to yield loss... The sensitivity of the variety is summarised, using the following symbols based on the yield responses across all trials: - not tested or insufficient data (z) no significant yield reductions at recommended rates or higher than recommended rates in (z) trials N (w/z) narrow margin, significant yield reductions at higher than recommended rate, but not at recommended rate significant event occurring w years out of z years tested...
