3) It is widely accepted that fungicide applications are generally most effective when applied with small-droplet technology, but such applications are also associated with the highest risk of spray drift... The project is about optimizing pesticide spray applications by: identifying spray technologies and spray settings with low risk of spray drift, applying pesticides in accordance with latest knowledge about pest behaviour in response to pesticides and minimizes the risk of target pests developing resistance, and by using pesticides with documented efficacy against target pests... A key nozzle technology on which we will focus is air-inducted nozzles and we will screen several popular ones first in the wind tunnel to select those that produce good control of droplet size with at least 20% air inclusions by volume...

Herbicide and pesticide applications to grain and other crops in Australia are likely to be the subject of increasing restrictions from mid 2010 onwards as the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) imposes no spray buffer zones and other spray drift mitigation measures to prevent off-target pesticide movements onto sensitive areas... The research has been conducted across the mid north of South Australia to determine if new and existing varieties of barley vary in tolerance to commonly used herbicides..
