The findings are from a nationally coordinated project supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) which aims to understand which landscape features contribute to the control of pest populations in crops... "Remnant bushland containing few weeds may reduce the number of pest species and at least delay the build-up of pests in crops during the growing season," she said... She is now using computer simulations of landscapes to understand which management practices - within crops and pastures as well as native vegetation - affect pest populations by encouraging beneficial insects or reducing sources of pests...

Ms Micic said that data taken from remnant vegetation in WA showed that insect pests were more likely to be found on weeds, while beneficial species were more likely to be found on native plant species... Repeated insecticide application keeps increasing the proportion of resistant individuals in a pest population until the majority are resistant to that insecticide... Before deciding to spray crops at tillering, flowering or podding: identify pests and the densities at which they are present in the crop; determine if pest populations are increasing, static or declining; and determine if beneficial insects such as parasitic wasps and ladybird beetles are present... Slug numbers can be estimated by laying a series of carpet squares or large tiles on page 4 the ground with baits underneath...

The aim of the research is to identify strategies that may enhance the survival of beneficial invertebrate species, as well as to increase the awareness of the importance of beneficial species and IPM strategies in the grains industry... Beneficial species collected included several species of wasp (both parasitic and predatory), spiders, predatory beetles, bugs and mites, lacewings and mantids... The greatest number of beneficial species were present in cereal crops during November (61), while only 8 beneficial species were found in canola crops during July...

In cropping systems relatively few insect species represent a significant threat to crop yield or are classified as pest species... Beneficial insects and other invertebrates ("beneficials") offer a variety of ecosystem services that are essential within agricultural environments and it is important to conserve and promote them as far as is practical within the constraints of controlling for major crop pests... Agriculture, by definition, manipulates the environment - we are providing large areas of a uniform resource for pest insects to thrive on...

Trogoderma granarium Everts (Khapra beetle) has been categorised in the PHA Biosecurity Plan for the Grains industry as one of the top 5 threats to the industry... The Biosecurity Plan requires the development of contingency plans in the event that an incursion is detected... Khapra beetle is one of the world's most damaging pests of stored grain, but identification is not at all simple < Keep browsing..

Growers do not have access to varieties with resistance to the key exotic pests and disease... The project will proceed in two phases... The project is about optimizing pesticide sprayapplications by: identifying spray technologies and spray settings with low risk of spraydrift, applying pesticides in accordance with latest knowledge about pest behaviour in response to pesticides andtherefore minimizes the risk of target pests developing resistance, and by using pesticides with documented efficacyagainst target pests...

Actual probabilities of weediness in an operational setting were found to be much lower than would be expected based on the performance of the WRA against test data containing a high proportion of weeds, and uncertainty around classifications was high... The methods presented have wider application to the quantitative prediction of invasive species for situations where the base-rate probability of invasiveness is subject to uncertainty, and the accuracy of the screening test is imperfect... Statistical modelling was used to estimate the base proportion of introduced alien plants that will naturalise at some stage in the future, and determined the distribution of times until naturalisation for these plants...
