Mouse monitoring a must to reduce crop damage risk.. NMMWG chair Ian Hastings says that monitoring must continue to occur on a paddock-by-paddock basis and growers should be prepared to bait immediately after sowing where higher than normal activity is identified. Thrips threaten spring mungbean crops.. The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is advising mungbean growers to be on alert for insect activity following recent reports of seedling thrips damage in spring crops near Goondiwindi... According to Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) senior entomologist Hugh Brier, thrips damage poses the greatest risk to spring mungbean crops but he said early damage rarely translated into yield loss...

The new app designed by the Invasive Animals CRC helps people to identify introduced vertebrate pests and to choose the most appropriate control measures... Project leader Peter West says the app features the 56 most damaging introduced pests including recent arrivals such as the Indian ringnecked parakeet, an aviary bird that is now appearing in the wild... The app includes: descriptions of each species and a map of their geographic range; photo galleries of animals and their tracks or droppings (where relevant); audio recordings of animal calls; and links to other pest control resources such as the PestSmart Toolkits, also produced by the Invasive Animals CRC...

Cabbage aphids living on the edge.. "Field trials at York and New Norcia in 2013 showed that cabbage aphids - which can cause feeding damage to canola crops in late winter and spring - tend to be distributed along crop edges," Mr Severtson said... Mr Severtson said that as well as highlighting the importance of weed control, the results implied that a border spray might be just as effective at controlling cabbage aphids as a full paddock spray, saving growers time and money...
