Recent field days in south-eastern Australia have given growers the opportunity to consider options for growing soybeans.. Soybean research agronomist Luke Gaynor (right) and climate specialist Dale Grey (left) say a near-full profile of moisture beneath the crop when 20 per cent of pods are turning yellow is important to ensure a high-yielding crop and enough stored soil moisture for the following cereal crop... When harvesting soybeans, Mr Gaynor said that large variations in seed moisture have an impact on total seed protein: "When growers are testing their soybeans after harvest they need to adjust their seed moisture content (on paper) back to 12 per cent or a dry matter basis for a fair comparison of total seed protein, especially when selling into the human-consumption market."..

The disease is ranked as the highest potential disease in field pea, chickpea, lentil and faba bean (4 of the PBA target crops) with an estimated cost to the AU industry of $84 million in annual disease controls and yield losses [1]... Recent scientific advances in knowledge and research methodologies provide an unprecedented opportunity to overcome the difficulties hindering improvement in AB resistance... The objective of the project is to provide PBA with advanced genetic knowledge (both on resistance and pathogen population structure), effective screening tools and methodologies and broader sources of genetic diversity in resistance to AB.AB of pulses is caused by closely related necrotrophic fungal species in the order of the Pleosporales (Appx A, Fig. 1A)...

In summary, 20 trials have now recently been undertaken across a number of seasons and locations in NSW. None of them have demonstrated S responses in yield or oil %. This does not exclude deficiency and yield penalties from occurring but does highlight that the frequency and the likelihood is not high... In summary, using Yield Prophet as a way of increasing soil water knowledge is more difficult to trial than probes... In summary, the growth in the use of probes to understand soil water is easily explained using the framework above...

Advice concerning the significance and control of the more common pests, or potential pests, of these crops is presented... Value of the crop (high value crops cannot sustain too much damage as a small loss in yield or quality could mean a large financial loss), the cost of the spray and its application and the likely yield or quality benefit gained from control... Crop monitoring Ongoing monitoring of crops and surrounding vegetation is essential to determine the presence of both pests and predators, and when, if any, intervention is required to keep pests at an acceptable level or, if feasible, boost predator numbers by introducing them into the system...
