Mention of a trade name or company in this publication does not imply endorsement of any product or company by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

KEYMESSAGES Lucerne is capable of using large amounts of saline groundwater but its rate of dry matter production decreases as groundwater salinity increases... Crop Updates is a partnership between the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia and the Grains Research & Development Corporation 131.. Overall, autumn cleaning date proved to be very robust as serradella emerged over a very wide time period (April to August) at both sites...

Balansa has good levels of hard seed which allow balansa clover to regenerate well after a season of cropping... Mid and late maturing varieties of balansa clover are commercially available, and this range allows the species to be grown in areas receiving between 350 and 800 mm of annual rainfall... Balansa clover grows best in monoculture; good performance with perennial grasses or short-lived ryegrass has been reported...

The project was designed to provide information about the ability of biserrula ( Biserrula pelecinus) pastures to contribute to grain production systems in the medium and low rainfall wheatbelt areas of Western Australia... Pasture crop rotation trials demonstrated that biserrula and its rhizobia are capable of persistence through at least three consecutive cereal crops, allowing farmers to crop more frequently and still retain legume dominant pastures... Further work is required to identify what appears to be a secondary plant compound in biserrula that can induce photosensitisation in some environmental circumstances...

We have applied late nitrogen over the past two seasons to a portion of our wheat crop to successfully grow and deliver Prime Hard (PH) wheat... My plan is for this paddock to receive top-dress nitrogen in late September or early October for PH 13% to 14% protein, only, if the profile is full and budgets indicate it is worth the risk... Goulburn has hard seed levels of 30% measured at the end of April...

Practical experience guides no-till evolution.. The 20 percent of graingrowers who produce up to 80 percent of WA"s wheat crop are now said to be using no-till systems, like Wagin grower Murray Gmeiner... Murray and his partner Linda, for example, still maintain a pasture rotation - evident by the incongruous sight of dung beetles busy in a mix of sheep droppings and decaying stubble from which this year"s wheat crop is emerging. They selected, as case studies, clients successful at both stock and crops and they entered their production data onto a spreadsheet... At the break-to-the-season put the sheep into areas saved for them, eg permanent pasture areas, saltbush, perennial veldt grass, standing crop, or into a containment area... Once the pasture gets to 3cm high, release the sheep and hopefully they will have feed in front of them for the rest of the season...

Farming systems which minimise the movement of soil and water will also minimise the loss of nutrients and pesticides... Overall, the only large difference was the lower Zn when superphosphate was applied... In summary, Mike has found a strategy to help him interpret his yield maps - and is now taking the same approach to other paddocks to maximise fertiliser savings...
