Pulse pathologist Dr Kevin Moore urges growers to resist the temptation to plant chickpeas in 2016 into paddocks with a recent history of chickpeas.. Planting chickpea on chickpea will favour ascochyta blight, phytophthora root rot (PRR), sclerotinia rot and root lesion nematodes and, if conditions are conducive, the first three have the potential to cause 100 per cent crop loss... Several paddocks on one farm were planted to Kyabra in 2014, and because ascochyta blight was not detected on the farm or in the district and El Ni o conditions were expected, some of these paddocks were sown to KyabraA again in 2015...

Clay and spading helps rebuild non-wetting soils.. On 19 July 2010, after about 78mm of rain, the nil treatment (Figure 1) had a lower plant density and went on to yield 0.66t/ha, while the 260t/ha of clay incorporated by spading plot (Figure 2) had a high plant density and went on to yield 1.41t/ha... In 2010 Trevor had electromagnetic surveys (EM38), gamma-ray spectrometry (radiometrics) and deep soil analysis done for measuring and mapping the depth to clay and he used these maps in 2011 to strictly apply clay only where it was needed...
