Crop resilience patiently built on soil health.. Stuart says on-farm trials over the past eight years show that inputs costs equate to one tonne of a two tonne per hectare crop but 2t of a 3t/ha crop... "The results show more nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are available when organic matter is introduced, and that there is more stored water in the top 10cm and no limit to the number of microbes, provided there is sufficient organic carbon," Stuart says...

Western Australian researchers investigating biochar have unearthed some promising results about its properties... UWA Institute of Agriculture Associate Professor Daniel Murphy, who is leading WA research under the GRDC biochar project, said new studies had also shown that biochar did not affect the rate at which nitrogen was released from the decomposition of organic matter in soil... "Biochar is a stable form of carbon which can remain in the soil for hundreds of years - we need to be very sure about its attributes before making recommendations about its use," Professor Murphy said...

The scheme is expected to cost some industries and benefit others, with profits possible for those that can trap (sequester) carbon or substantially reduce current carbon emission levels... Each company in the scheme will have an emissions target set for them, which can be met by reducing emissions or buying carbon credits... Experts predict that because of this, agriculture will be managed upstream and downstream: products will be assessed under the scheme at a point in the sale chain (for example, at the abattoirs for stock) and inputs will be assessed prior to use (for example, diesel and agri-chemicals)...

The project will do more than provide a general awareness of climate change and its implications for agriculture... High-profile on-ground activities in Queensland and NSW will address each of the Climate Change Research Program (CCRP) priorities: managing emissions, better soil management, and adapting to a changing climate... The activities will help farmers and advisers to understand the implications for management on their own farms and start developing their own adaptation strategies...

PEM bacteria are important as they are common, suppress multiple diseases, interact with other organisms to increase suppression and can be correlated with reduced disease in the field... Crop selection could be used to increase suppressive microbes and enhance disease suppression on-farm... In summary, the project increased our understanding of disease suppression and the organisms involved, identified potential biocontrol inoculants that can reduce disease in the field as seed coatings to provide in-season Rhizoctonia disease control, and identified a potential strategy using crop selection to increase naturally occurring disease suppression in the field to provide long-term control of soilborne fungal diseases...

European earwigs have emerged as a pest of increasing significance in the past five to ten years as a result of changes in farming practices... Grain harvested at night is more likely to contain earwigs and require cleaning... If the windrows are harvested using crop lifters, there will be significantly more invertebrates, such as earwigs, present in the harvested grain compared with grain harvested using a belt pick-up front...
