Oil composition can be compromised and lead to a change in fatty acid profiles if the seed is harvested when too moist, the seed has been excessively thrashed, admixture / moisture and disease levels are too high or the temperatures in your silo reach 35 C plus for more than 3 or 4 days in a row... For the reasons above, we need a cropping/pasture rotation..

3 - 4 days later than optimum Answers to the perceived effects of windrowing 3 - 4 days later than the optimum time on yield and oil content included answers ranging between having little or no effect on either oil or yield, to losing oil to levels as low as 10% final oil content whilst at the same time others believed there were possible gains totalling 60% (and in one instance 75%) oil content... Earlier analysis of 140 respondents examining correlations with years of experience in the canola industry revealed there to be no significant difference in responses to oil and yield related to optimal windrowing time... The trial results support previous research findings, showing the significant yield and oil penalties, and potential economic losses to the grower that may occur when windrowing earlier than industry guidelines...

Silos must meet the latest gas-tight standards if the industry is to reverse the increasing phosphine resistance among grain storage pests... Use a tubeless tyre valve to pressurise the silo with an air compressor then unscrew the centre of the valve to get higher air flow into the silo... When fumigation has been completed, silos should be opened and ventilated using an aeration fan for one day...
