In a survey of 134 paddocks across the northern grains region during 2003-06, we found that 41% of sunflower crops were sown into a long fallow following a winter cereal (wheat or barley), 25% of crops were sown into a short fallow following sorghum, and just 13% were double cropped into wheat or barley stubble (L Serafin and S Belfield, unpublished)... Further trial work is needed to provide additional data to develop our understanding of the full impacts of sulfur nutrition... The results suggest that sunflower oil contents may be more specifically targeted and fertiliser N inputs more accurately determined for optimum profitability...

The Lower Eyre Peninsula survey showed most paddocks had internal blackleg infection levels below 10% unlikely to suffer a yield or oil content penalty... Current varieties have a number of resistance genes if blackleg overcomes one resistance gene, other resistance genes remain effective and so the crops should not become completely susceptible... Final grain yield after slashing was similar in all varieties (about 0.8 t/ha average), except CB1206 (0.2 t/ha)...

Provided the crop is harvested on time and the header set up correctly, direct heading allows for maximum yields, but no more than a well-timed windrowing... "I'm getting more capacity out of the header in direct heading because I don't need to take as much residue and put it through the header as when I was windrowing," Tom says... Research is still being conducted to determine the effect of these viruses on the yield of canola in WA. European work has found seed yield losses of 10-15% associated with this virus disease in canola... Higher grain yields were achieved and infection levels of blackleg reduced when commercial hybrid seed was used... Yeruga Crop Research's Trent Potter says the aim was to measure the effect of retaining hybrid sowing seed on plant vigour, internal blackleg infection, oil content and grain yield, compared with the original commercial hybrid bought from a seed supplier... Hybrid seed assessed included Conventional (Hyola 50 at all sites and Taurus at Bool Lagoon), Clearfield (45Y77, 45Y82, 46Y83 and Hyola 575CL) and triazine-tolerant (CB Tumby HT and CB Jardee HT)...
