The primary function of cover crops is to produce biomass and provide continuous ground cover that protects the soil from erosion, conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, adds diversity, promotes soil biological activity and increases soil fertility through nutrient cycling... The main outcome of this project was to encourage growers to use cover crops in the rotation...

Dry matter and grain yield data for each of the four species, wheat, oats, barley and triticale were compared, across varieties for an indication of their respective performances (Table 2)... A total dry matter production was calculated for all varieties with the exception of the varieties Dictator , Genie , Taipan , Amarok and Whistler , which were only trialled in seasons where one dry matter assessment was possible... Urambie , El Alamein , Endeavour and Tennant were the best dual purpose performers of the 40 varieties evaluated in this paper...

Among cereal variety x herbicide combinations evaluated, 10% of wheat, 9% of barley and 26% of oat treatments were found to result in significant yield losses (3-54%) in one or more seasons... Overall, 115 barley variety x herbicide combinations, 158 wheat variety x herbicide combinations and 88 oat variety x herbicide combinations were evaluated at label rates... Overall, 18 lentil variety x herbicide combinations, 24 faba bean variety x herbicide combinations, 45 field pea x herbicide combinations and 30 chickpea x herbicide combinations were evaluated at label recommended and 2 x recommended application rates and timings...

"There is growing interest in expanding oat production in these lower-rainfall areas to diversify rotations and help manage seasonal rainfall variation, declining grain prices, higher input costs, frost risk in susceptible paddocks and increasing weed burdens," he says...
