Net blotches (Pyrenophora teres f. teres and P.t. f. maculata) remain the major diseases of barley in the northern region... While net form net blotch (P.t. f. teres) can be the more devastating disease, resistance to the disease is present in several of our leading varieties... Seed harvested from crops heavily infected with net form net blotch should not be retained for sowing...

The project, together with its sister project based out of Tamworth with New South Wales Agriculture (NSW Ag), has underscored the growing area of canola in the northern grains region... Results from rotation experiments in northern NSW involving canola showed higher yields of wheat following brassica crops than those after either winter cereals or chickpeas, supporting results from southern Australia that the brassica crops are actively controlling cereal diseases... Survey results collected for this project suggest that a major motivation for growers to grow canola is to control problems of root diseases in winter cereals...

Cameron Tonkin & Giles Butler (NSW Agriculture) 9:45 AM How the crop produces grain -getting the basics right.. Ground cover is estimated by looking at a crop in several places around a paddock at an angle of 45 through the hole created by putting the tip of your index finger and thumb together and estimating the percentage of the hole covered by crop, not soil... Plant height measured on 6/2/01 after each crop was: after wheat: 22 cm after canola: 18 cm after mustard: 16 cm..

" Print the page Ascochyta blight is a serious disease of chickpeas... Long-term tillage and rotation trials conducted by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries have shown that through the adoption of best management practice (BMP) and breaking cereal monocultures by allocating 15-20% of winter cropping area to chickpeas, leading growers in Queensland and New South Wales have seen an average increase of 1 t/ha in yield and 1% in grain protein content in their following wheat crops... Agronomic guidelines for best management practice are widely available through the websites and publications of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and Pulse Australia...
