Crop sequence trial demonstrates break crop profits.. The effect of rotation is clear - the canola/wheat/wheat rotation (left) had 31 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare applied, while the vetch/canola/wheat rotation (right) had 9kg of N/ha applied... Rotations in the Mallee that have a break crop for two consecutive years are proving more profitable than rotations with only one break crop...

Detections of fusarium crown rot in Western Australian cereal crops have increased this season, particularly in central and northern cropping regions... The Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) has reported constant demand this season on its diagnostic service, AGWEST Plant Laboratories (APL), to identify root diseases including crown rot present in samples... The key message to growers from DAFWA researchers including Daniel H berli and Shahajahan Miyan is to test wheat and barley crops before or at harvest if they are showing signs of crown rot or other soilborne diseases and pests such as rhizoctonia bare patch and root lesion nematodes (RLN)...

The importance of summer rain in the Wimmera-Mallee has become anecdotally apparent in recent dry years, and is likely to increase under forecast climate change with a greater proportion of annual rain falling in summer... Increasing the efficiency of storage and crop use of summer rain represents an obvious pathway to increasing farm WUE. Producers are currently uncertain which farming systems and attributes thereof can best capture this potential resource... The project has shown that by controlling summer weeds and growing specific break crops in rotation will improve crops water use efficiency by more than 10%...

Biological suppression may cut root disease losses - By Sharon Watt.. The research involves a focus on how the environment and management practices influence levels of Rhizoctonia inoculum that initiate the disease and the extent of infection in cereal crops... Dr Vadakattu says measures targeting both the Rhizoctonia inoculum and the infection itself are needed to help control the disease...

Stop disease and pest cycles in their tracks with crop checks this harvest.. Growers are being urged to test wheat and barley crops before or at harvest that are showing signs of soilborne diseases and pests - especially fusarium crown rot, rhizoctonia bare patch and root lesion nematodes (RLN)... Crown rot is caused by the soilborne fungus fusarium ( F. pseudograminearum and F. culmorum ), which infects plants at the crown and reduces water supply to the head...
