By Bob Freebairn Agricultural consultant, Coonabarabran NSW In long-term US trials, no-till corn grown continually for 39 years with high rates of nitrogen has not only yielded highest, but also has soil organic matter levels similar to adjoining permanent perennial grass pasture... Both no-till and cultivation-grown (mouldboard plough) corn with no nitrogen yielded less than half the moderate-to-full nitrogen fertiliser treatments and had lower soil organic matter levels in the upper 50 centimetres of the soil profile... Corn grown with no nitrogen has soil organic carbon levels - for both no-till and ploughing - more than 20 per cent lower than high-nitrogen-rate no-till or the permanent pasture...
