Researchers go head-to-head with head loss.. Barley 'head loss' had a bigger than usual effect on crop yields during Western Australia's recent weather-affected harvest, but the good news is that new research into the problem is starting to generate results... The project supervisor with DAFWA, Chengdao Li, said the research aimed to understand the head loss risk among commercially available varieties and advanced breeding lines; understand the molecular basis of head loss; and develop selection tools that breeding programs could use to breed new barley varieties with better head loss tolerance...

Nine breeding lines derived using MAS were evaluated in the Stage 4 crop variety trials (CVT)... MAS is becoming a valuable breeding technique and can be routinely used in the breeding program...

The industry's importance is also reflected in the increasing number of new varieties on offer and this, says Department of Agriculture and Food, WA (DAFWA) senior research officer Blakely Paynter, is causing some uncertainty for growers in deciding which variety to grow... The guide includes agronomic information about each variety, with a particular focus on new and emerging options... "The aim is to provide information that will help growers with decision-making about whether to grow a malting barley variety to chase a potentially higher price, or a food/feed barley variety that consistently produces high yields and suffers less from disease or weeds," Mr Paynter says...
