Lupins provide a valuable pulse component of crop rotations in South Australia (SA) and Victoria (VIC), particularly on low fertility neutral to acid sands where other pulse crops perform poorly... Early generation lines from breeding programs in Western Australia (WA) and New South Wales (NSW) for narrow-leafed, albus and rough-seeded lupins were evaluated in the field in SA and Victoria from 2007 to 2010... The total economic benefit of the release and adoption of improved lupin varieties in SA and Victoria is estimated at $3.2_M per year...

The hybrids produced by this project between L. angustifolius and L. luteus will provide the starting material for new research work to backcross the individuals to parent genotypes and current Australian cultivars... The lupin hormone mix developed during the project produced the greatest crossing success rate, but this was not significantly greater than the water treatment... The project succeeded in producing true hybrids for the key cross combination of narrow-leafed lupin x yellow lupin and this result has opened the opportunity for trait transfer between these important crop lupin species...

Yellow lupins (YLs) have higher protein content and quality than narrow-leafed lupins (NLLs)... A conservative estimate from commercial marketers suggests that whole yellow lupins should receive in the order of $50/tonne premium over narrow-leafed lupins... The desired outcome of this project was to develop agronomically superior varieties of YL, primarily for WA but with potential for other parts of Australia, to meet the strong demand of premium markets for the nutritionally superior grain...
