Wheat crops on the deep ripped plots have already grown roots and accessed water to a depth of 40cm below the soil surface - a much deeper level compared with the unripped plots... "In coming weeks, roots in the ripped plots may access soil water below 40cm and these crops could produce yields up to 0.5 tonnes per hectare greater than the crops on the untreated plots," CSIRO researcher Phil Ward said... "During winter, there was virtually no water uptake at 20 to 40cm in the untreated soils, but there was significant water uptake and root growth at this depth in the ripped plots," Dr Ward said...

A major collaborative research effort aims to develop and deliver solutions for a range of soil constraints which limit productive grain cropping in Western Australia... Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) western regional panel chairman Peter Roberts said 'Soils Constraints - West' was focusing on non-wetting soils, subsoil constraints, soil compaction and soil acidity... "Soil Constraints - West represents more than $33 million of new research aimed at addressing these significant issues over the next five years," he said...

Researchers, growers and steering committee members involved with the $36 million collaborative research effort Soil Constraints - West toured sites in the Midlands region for an update on trial work which has been conducted for the past year under the initiative... Mr Even said the grower had designed his own disc for use on the 30-disc Chamberlain plough, which had every second disc removed... "The plates create a slot in the soil behind the tyne which allows topsoil to flow down into the subsoil profile, to help prevent deep ripped soil from becoming compacted again," he said...
