To optimise crop yields when cultivation has been used to overcome soil water repellence, researchers are recommending deep soil testing first, then surface soil testing after cultivation to get a better idea of subsequent nutrient needs... Mouldboard ploughing and spading to invert the soil can change the distribution of phosphorus, potassium, organic carbon, sulfur and pH in the top 40cm... Uptake of phosphorus by Hindmarsh barley plants in the 2012 trials at eight weeks after sowing was consistent at about two kilograms per hectare for mouldboard ploughing, spading, banded wetting agent and nil cultivation with no extra phosphorus...

Tony White and his family have increased their wheat yields by applying 2.5 to 3.0 tonnes per hectare of lime and then hiring spading and mouldboard ploughing contractors to push the ameliorant into acidic subsoils on their farm near Miling, Western Australia... For the past two seasons, Tony has harvested more grain by doubling his usual rate of lime and using spading and mouldboard ploughing to really drive the ameliorant into the subsoil...

It should be noted that the yield responses measured with paired cuts on water repellent areas were quite large compared to the average grain yield advantage for the winged point-paired row system across the whole paddock (200 kg/ha)... Recent research indicates that some of these formulations only work on quite specific soil types such as the forest loamy gravels or on firmer soils with reasonable clay content and are less effective on the repellent sands... Soil water content contradicted the findings on water repellence and indicated that water infiltration was best under zero-tillage and stubble retention and poorest under stubble removal and cultivation (Figure 1B), and this impacted on crop performance...

Furrow sowing often worsens water repellence.. New research findings confirm grower observations that Western Australia's most common seeding technique - furrow sowing using knife points and press wheels - often exacerbates water repellence on sandplain soils... "But recent evidence shows this technique can in some circumstances actually cause water repellent soil to become concentrated with the seed and fertiliser in the base of the furrow," he said "This may be a result of the flow of dry, water repellent soil around the knife point and into the slot ahead of the closer plate and press wheel...
