Grain growers in the southern cropping region can access useful soil moisture maps thanks to the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) which is regularly publishing updated maps during the winter crop sowing period... The AEGIC was established in November 2012 by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and the Western Australian State Government (through the Department of Agriculture and Food, WA )... AEGIC supports the trade and use of Australian grains around the world through cutting-edge grain quality and processing technology and market research innovation...

Summer crop a risk management tool.. Bill says that provided the plant can access stored moisture, sorghum can produce yield and rotational benefit in the hottest of summers, although the late summer rainfall should boost yield by about 10 per cent. ".. We see sorghum as a great means of managing risk by transferring moisture from year to year - which it did from summer 2008 through to grain and feed in summer/autumn 2010," he says. "..

The lesser grain borer is a major pest affecting grains storage in high rainfall zones... A specialist in grains storage systems, Peter Botta of PCB Consulting, is urging growers to regularly check stored grain to avoid damage from insects, mould and humidity... Mr Botta says sampling by sieving for insects when grain is being loaded for delivery allows growers to safely determine whether it is insect-free or requires treatment. "..

The race to get the winter wheat in and up is an increasing challenge for Western Australian grower Nick Gillett, who farms 9000 hectares at Bencubbin, north-east of Perth... Farm owners: Nick and Tryphena Gillett Location: Bencubbin, Western Australia Farm size: 9000 hectares of arable land Farm manager: Nick Gillett Rainfall: 310 millimetres (growing season: 225mm) Soil type: 50 per cent mallee; 30 per cent heavy clay; 20 per cent sand and gravel Soil pH: from 4.5 to 8.5 (continuous liming program to reach a minimum topsoil pH of 6) Crops: 5000ha wheat, 2000ha barley and 2000ha of fallow, canola and pasture.. Nick says dry conditions at season's end (late spring) can now be pretty much guaranteed, so for the farm to be profitable and sustainable, timely crop emergence under marginal conditions needs to be improved...

Yield data, collected since 2003 and from typical seasons, will be used for zoning, as will Precision SoilTech soil testing, nutrient analysis from CSBP (a division of Wesfarmers) and local knowledge, Nick says...

The prospect of wheat varieties carrying drought tolerance genes is exciting news for northern NSW grain grower Geoff O'Neill, of "Llano", Bellata... The ARC Centre of Plant Energy Biology at Australian National University has identified genes which influence how plants cope under moisture stress... The property receives an annual average rainfall of 590mm, and although it falls predominantly in summer, the most useful rain arrives during the winter months...

Dry springs redefining the growing season.. As Nick Gillett gets ready for the 2015 winter cereal season the shadows of previous seasons cross his mind, particularly those of the past decade - which included some of the driest seasons on record... The seeding regime is changing: the aim now being to get the crop in and maturing to beat moisture stress...

Drought tolerance genes to provide spring protection.. The ARC Centre of Plant Energy Biology at Australian National University has identified genes which influence how plants cope under moisture stress... "In years when the rainfall outlook is marginal, or our subsoil moisture is not ideal, having varieties with the ability to tolerate moisture stress will give us a lot more confidence to go ahead and plant."..
