I strongly believe that with good management in the right environment, livestock can complement a cropping enterprise in a number of ways and vice versa... The Environment Conventional cropping systems in the Central USA have low levels of biological diversity and rely heavily on synthetic fertilisers and herbicides... An experiment run over 10 years by Texas Tech University USA, has shown that an integrated crop/forage/livestock system compared with a cotton monoculture has decreased nitrogen use by 40% and lowered irrigation water use by 25% whilst maintaining similar profitability between the two systems...

Research strategy to grow out of dual-purpose crops review.. Results from the survey will play a pivotal part in building a future national research strategy aimed at assisting mixed farmers in extracting maximum value from dual-purpose crops, which can be grazed in the early vegetative stages before continuing on to produce grain... Mr Giles says that while dual-purpose crops have been popular for several decades in high-rainfall zones, providing winter stockfeed before continuing on to produce normal grain yields, their use is now extending to traditional grain belts as more grain growers introduce livestock into their cropping operations...

Dual-purpose cereal crops are an integral part of the mixed farming system in New South Wales... Whilst the recent industry focused grazing programs has been on optimising grazing management, only limited work has been undertaken on species and cultivar differences and understanding what these differences have on DM and livestock performances in mixed farming systems... Studies by NSW DPI have shown that selecting the right species and cultivar can significantly increase overall production of grazing crops in a mixed farming system, with differences between species potentially adding 750kg DM/ha and between cultivar within species choice 780kg DM/ha...
