Rusts The cold winter, dry spring and widespread use of fungicides when needed kept foliar pathogens at generally low levels during 2012... With a change of seasonal conditions in 2013 the risk of, and damage from, stripe rust could be much greater so growers are urged to remain vigilant with in-furrow treatments or early fungicide sprays to control this disease... Should growers decide to apply early protection for stripe rust they can choose cheaper seed treatments containing flutriafol or triadimenol or longer acting treatments based on fluquinconazole or fertiliser- applied fungicides...

The best means for controlling powdery mildew is by avoiding more susceptible wheat and barley varieties... if powdery mildew is allowed to develop in crops, there is a serious risk of fungicide resistance developing as well as loss of resistance in current and future varieties... Spraying needs to be done early with full rates of fungicide...

Monitoring of all Western Australian barley crops for powdery mildew disease and careful fungicidal management including the use of seed dressings will reduce the risk of yield losses this season, with commonly grown varieties found to have an increased susceptibility to the disease... Recent rainfall could favour the development of powdery mildew, which has already been observed in barley regrowth at a number of sites across barley growing regions in WA's central and southern grain growing regions... Implications of SFNB infection on barley production in Victoria is not understood as no studies into the epidemiology or control of the disease have been documented since its first detection in the early 1990s... The aim of the study was to establish the importance of SFNB to Victorian barley production and identify control strategies for its management... The study has shown that barley varieties with even partial resistance (seedling resistance) can provide control of SFNB...

Powdery mildew survey seeks SA barley grower input South Australian barley growers are being urged to help in the fight against fungicide resistance by participating in a survey assessing resistance in the damaging barley disease, powdery mildew... Australian Research Centre for Necrotrophic Fungal Pathogens (ACNFP) director and GRDC western panel deputy chairman Richard Oliver said the samples would reveal fungicide resistance patterns, and help breeders produce new barley varieties resistant to powdery mildew... Professor Oliver said growers could protect barley crops from powdery mildew and limit the spread of resistant powdery mildew strains by controlling barley volunteers, growing barley varieties resistant to the disease and using effective fungicides. Western Australian growers are being encouraged to understand foliar fungal diseases of cereals and how to manage them... The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has released a western region-specific version of the Cereal Fungicides Fact Sheet, aimed at assisting growers in managing cereal fungicide use... According to GRDC plant health technologies program manager Ken Young, fungicides are just one component of an effective management strategy and do not increase yield; they protect yield potential and cannot retrieve lost yield if applied after infection is established...
