Research is showing that increased lime use across WA is affecting micronutrient concentrations in crop plants and changing the residual value of these nutrients on acid soils... To assess the micronutrient status of cereal crops, samples of flag leaves are the best bet for tissue testing analysis... Dr Brennan, of the Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA), says the MPCN team is also finding that liming on acid soils reduces Cu, Zn and Mn concentrations but increases Mo in crop plants and can change the residual value of micronutrients...

Time right to test for copper deficiency.. Crop leaves showing the symptoms of copper deficiency... Cu concentrations less than about 1.5 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) parts per million (ppm) mean the crop is deficient in the nutrient and a foliar Cu spray should be applied before flowering, followed by a soil application of granular Cu fertiliser for next year's crop..

About 8 million hectares of Western Australia (WA) were inherently deficient in micronutrients (copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) and molybdenum (Mo) and to a lesser extent manganese (Mn)... If untreated can result in widespread and severe nutrient deficiencies, including those caused by poor supply or use of micronutrients... There is also increasing concern that micronutrient supplies from the soil may no longer be adequate for current cropping systems that are more productive, more intensive and more reliant on supplies of fertiliser N and P.
