Durum production in the southern region fell in the lead-up to this project... Samples from affected trials have been sent to a DNA laboratory for a quantitative assessment of fungal DNA. Irrespective of the mechanism, this germplasm appears to represent an improvement in field performance under disease pressure... Further research is required to complete this study and develop a more precise understanding of how the environment affects yellow pigment content...

High-throughput marker techniques allow monitoring of the entire genome, and offer the possibility of a recombination-based strategy selecting individuals based on genome configuration... In order to further refine the graphical genotypes of these lines, they were extensively genotyped with simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to both further refine the graphical genotypes and also to identify SSR markers that differentiated the individuals and characterised the regions of the genome to be selected... Only 1000 DH lines were available for the project...

The aim of the project was to enhance capability in marker validation and implementation in the Western Australian (WA) barley breeding program, leading to more rapid development of improved varieties... Markers were used to: accelerate backcrossing; inter-cross various target traits; improve genetic value of doubled haploid (DH) lines by screening donor plants; and improve genetic gain by post-screening DH lines... Molecular markers were used to: (1) accelerate back-crossing target traits into elite genetic backgrounds; (2) inter-cross various target traits; (3) improve genetic value of DH lines by pre-screening donor plants for DH production; and (4) improve genetic gain by post-screening DH lines before field testing...

More than 70,000 marker assays associated with 22 important traits/genes were used to integrate doubled haploid (DH), single seed descent (SSD), male sterile facilitated recurrent selection (MSFRS) and conventional breeding techniques to improve genetic gain and reduce the breeding cycle time... Nine breeding lines derived using MAS were evaluated in the Stage 4 crop variety trials (CVT)... MAS is becoming a valuable breeding technique and can be routinely used in the breeding program...

The aim of the project was to develop closely linked molecular markers in wheat for traits that were suggested by breeders or collaborative partners at the Molecular Plant Breeding Cooperative Research Centre (MPBCRC)... All three objectives were achieved: two closely linked markers (< 20kb) to the 7A maturity locus were identified and further alleles were suggested to segregate in Australian germplasm; two markers were developed for the 2A rust gene (< 2cM) and marker density at three drought-tolerance related loci was increased by adding 53 markers out of more than 200 screened simple sequence repeats (SSRs)... The genetic map of the cross between Berkut and Krichauff can be seen as a valuable genetic resource indicated by the many projects on QTL identification in this population such as yield under drought stress, salinity in hydroponics and field and grain fructan content...

Markers have been implemented for rust resistance (VPM resistance gene complex, Yr17, Lr37 and Sr38 ), resistance to black point, and resistance to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), in a total of about 2,700 tests... Marker implementation will increase dramatically over the next few years as markers for traits of high priority to EGA are validated... In 2003/04 nearly 300 lines were also assessed for resistance to BYDV using markers...
