Consultant's Corner: Wheels are moving on Controlled Traffic Farming - The research view.. Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA) economist James Hagan is involved with a Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) funded project aimed at minimising the impact of soil compaction on crop yield... "But while a perfectly matching system is optimal for minimising the impact of compaction, there are often compromises that need to be made in order to work in with existing production systems," Mr Hagan said...

State-based biosecurity restrictions could add a big cleaning bill to machinery imports.. Areas where debris commonly collects include the driver's cabin, on the chassis, in the grain bin, augers, belts, elevators, spreaders, choppers, tyres, rims, sieves, radiator and under any guards... Ask if the cost of arranging cleaning, applying for certificates and permits, transport and after-sales service is included in their quote...

Viability of unmanned continuous cropping and use of machinery to address labour constraints.. I believe that using GM varieties with non-selective chemical traits, growers would be able to have continuous cropping as an achievable option, instead of being pressured into a pasture phase, hay production or buying expensive equipment for trash collection when harvesting or shielded sprayers and wider sowing rows... Conclusion I believe Australia has a great future in growing wheat and continues to need a rotation of some description (e.g. crops or pasture phase) to maximise wheat quality and yields...

Central Queensland grower David Trevilyan reflects on a lifetime of machinery innovation... David built the machine, powered by a D9 Cat engine with 385 horsepower and 2535 newton metres of torque, between 1971 and 1975 to pull a heavy land plane he had developed to help level melon holes or gilgai (natural depressions in the soil) that covered one-third of his cropping area... Looking to the future, David is focused on fine-tuning the machines he custom builds to withstand generations of farm ownership in grains operations across the country and, increasingly, around the globe...

Disc popularity raises need for buyer homework.. Legal and machinery experts are urging grain growers to carefully research the range of disc seeders on the market to make sure the equipment they buy is suitable for their situation... Mr Sulman suggests asking suppliers: for written evidence outlining research data specific to the machine being purchased to assess its suitability for the farming system, soil type and moisture profile; or to sow a trial, or multiple trials, under different seasonal conditions on-farm; or to lease the machine so it can be tested for performance...

Machinery efficiency showcased in CQ.. Tour organiser Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) principal technical officer Maurice Conway said the tour primarily attracted young growers keen to employ new technologies to generate time and labour savings and maximise crop production opportunities... The disc system is now incorporating on-the-go unit downforce monitoring and adjustment, section control to shut off rows to reduce overlap, variable rate planting and fertilizer application with maps overlaid from historical yield data, soil type and observation," he said...
