" 2.2 Lupin Agronomic Improvement in the Western Region - Enhancing the profitability of the lupin/wheat rotation DAW00099 Start Date: 01/07/2004.. The project has provided guidance on which techniques are best used under various circumstances and environments and how to balance the trade-offs... Results from the project showed that to compensate for the reduced yield potential due to delaying sowing by a week, annual ryegrass densities would need to be cut by at least 60 plants/m and wild radish densities by at least 2 plants/m in low rainfall areas...

The frequency of lupins in the rotation has declined but the widening of the rotation has created some advantages for lupins... One year of lupins in four seems much more sustainable and WA still has the potential to produce in excess of 1.4 million tonnes in most seasons... Lupins will remain the dominant legume crop in WA because of their adaptation to large areas of sandplain soils...

" We can kill wild radish in lupins if we have enough spray capacity.. The research shows that a robust pre-sowing herbicide followed by two post-emergent sprays for wild radish in lupins is now best practice for problem paddocks... The addition of metribuzin to simazine pre-sowing of lupins gave significant improvements in wild radish control (tables 1 & 2; figure 1)...

" Grower adoption and implementation of strategies to manage soil water repellence in farming systems.. No detailed time-series soil surveys have been conducted to confirm the perception that water repellence is increasing the expression of the constraint is easier to diagnose than most because of the obvious nature of the impacts on establishment, water infiltration and variable soil wetting... The grower intends to continue mouldboard ploughing and using the paired row seeder which is also a good implement for seeding ploughed areas...
