Mention of a trade name or company in this publication does not imply endorsement of any product or company by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

KEYMESSAGES Incorrect use of phosphine since the 1950s, has led to escalating resistance in stored grain insects which threatens the continued use of phosphine at the farm level... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil... When running a trial it is important to: 1...

Early work on canola focused on weed management strategies including the breeding of herbicide tolerant canola varieties such as triazine tolerant (TT) varieties which now account for an estimated 90% of canola grown in WA... Research is still being conducted to determine the effect of these viruses on the yield of canola in WA. European work has found seed yield losses of 10-15% associated with this virus disease in canola... The amount of air passed through the grain is measured in litres per second per tonne and varies depending on the particular aeration strategy...

` The aim is to do this across all rainfall zones (high, medium and low), using both major cereal grains grown in WA (wheat and barley). The accepted definition of canopy management is 'managing the green surface area of the crop canopy in order to optimise profitability'... To date in WA, there has been some canopy management work undertaken in the high rainfall zones, but there has been no research done in the medium to low rainfall zones... ConsultAg wish to undertake a 3 year research project to validate, and if worthy, integrate the principles of canopy management into the Western Australian cropping system...

The main risks associated with dry sowing are weed management, crop establishment and frost... Dry sowing can boost crop yields, increase sown area and reduce the risks of end-of-season heat-stress events... Dr Minkey says dry sowing is best done when weed seedbanks are low to reduce the risk of yield loss from weed competition...

Finally to the numerous farmers, business people and researchers I met around the world that were also very generous with their time and knowledge, thank you... It is widely regarded that cactus is high yielding, highly palatable and a readily available source of carbohydrates but lacks crude protein and crude fibre to get the best performance out of cactus it needs to be supplemented with a cheap source of fibre and protein (Nefzaoui, Salem, Salem, 2000, p512 - 516)... Develop a farming operation where a normal budget would rely on less than 50% of traditional farming system to generate the income reducing exposure to financial risk in droughts...

Whilst there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that dry seeding has been widely adopted in Western Australia, especially in the lower rainfall agronomic zones, the extent and management of dry seeding are not well documented, particularly for wheat crops... The aims of the paper are to determine the extent of dry seeding across the agro-ecological zones of the Western Australian Wheatbelt, to uncover the trends of adoption by soil types, rainfall and crop species and to define the management practices and gaps in knowledge around the risks of dry seeding crops in Western Australia... Central Wheatbelt "We prefer to sow canola dry as I have had good results doing this, less staggered germination, better early vigour etc. we only dry sow wheat into clean paddocks where I don't need weed control"..

The crop has a number of advantages over canola and will deliver the same rotational benefits as canola... Juncea canola will grow in most soils in south-western NSW but soils with a pH Caof 5.5-7.5 are preferred... Some early research conducted in the Mallee of north west Victoria suggested that nitrogen requirements were lower than for canola, but until further trial work indicates otherwise, fertiliser rates normally applied to canola should be used on juncea canola...

Figure 1 Facilitating better trial design - By Gio Braidotti Eight facilitators have been appointed to head the GRDC's new research, development and extension (RD&E) platform - the Regional Cropping Solutions (RCS) networks... Nine networks are being established across the southern and western growing regions... The newly appointed facilitators are to head these networks, a role that requires familiarity with long-standing and emerging local issues and the ability to identify the research question that best helps address these challenges...
