In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

A disease control model for crown rot in Victoria and South Australia (SA) which provides crop management recommendations to reduce the build-up of Fusarium inoculum and avoid sowing into high disease risk situations... Crown rot is highly spatially variable, so intensive and extensive sampling programs were undertaken to assess the the reliability of results produced using current sampling protocols... Intensive stubble and soil sampling was used to assess the scale of spatial variability of crown rot and whether taking soil cores in a row crop was causing "spikes" in results...

It should be noted that these trials are not intended to substitute for commercial testing and are quite limited in their nature and insufficient to allow the companies to directly identify hybrid combinations... Each year the seed companies provide DPI&F with reports outlining the use they have made of germplasm in breeding and the sales of hybrids that contain DPI&F germplasm which is used to calculate royalty payments... The list will not identify particular line numbers but will detail the year a cross was made, the pedigrees of the lines and the reason the particular cross was made (e.g. ergot resistance) and the number of these lines that are active both in Australia and internationally...

The National Mungbean Improvement Program (NMIP) has delivered immediate productivity and profitability gains to Northern Region growers and set the foundation to deliver the next generation of varieties that will increase crop reliability and grower confidence... From the foundation, NMIP will develop the next generation of mungbean varieties which combine productivity gains, yield stability and specific adaptation to regional and irrigated production to further increase grower confidence and adoption of mungbeans... Two hundred and sixty new lines developed in this project were evaluated in Stage 1 yield trials at Biloela, Hermitage and Narrabri in 2007/08...

Highly vigorous wheat lines have been developed which can produce up to double the biomass of commonly grown varieties by the early tillering stage, effectively shading out weeds... Increased root growth also enables the wheat to out-compete weeds for water and nutrients... The best of the competitive lines grown at Eradu yielded 3.4 tonnes per hectare, compared with 3.5t/ha for Magenta , the top yielding commercial line...

The project will coordinate the introduction of diverse barley germplasm selected from both the landrace collections and international breeding programs managed by ICARDA... The project will utilise expertise of breeders in both Australia and ICARDA to identify targeted sets of lines that encompass the desired traits and genes required to assist the ongoing development of improved barley varieties for Australian conditions... Key activities will include: i) importation of a diverse sets of at least 100 lines per year selected from across the ICARDA barley nurseries, ii) importation of up to 50 barley landrace accessions that have been previously phenotyped for disease resistance by ICARDA, iii) importation of up to 250 barley landrace accessions in 2016/17 that have been phenotyped for heat and/or drought tolerance at ICARDA, iv) quarantine of all lines and landraces imported into Australia, v) seed increase of all imported lines on two sites and landraces at one site post-quarantine, vi) phenotyping the imported lines and up to 50 landrace accessions for multiple disease resistances..

Natural selection has played a significant role in the selection of drought tolerance in chickpeas since their cultivation... Chickpeas play an important role in the sustainability of cereal-based farming systems by improving soil health by fixing atmospheric nitrogen reducing the use of nitrogenous fertilisers produced using fossil fuels... The main goal of the project was to enhance production and productivity of chickpeas under Mediterranean type environments through genetic and agronomic manipulation...
