CSIRO complex systems team leader Dr Lindsay Bell heads the ground-breaking GRDC-funded Northern Farming Systems project exploring ways to boost whole-farm cropping productivity... The Northern Farming Systems Project involves one core trial site, six regional sites and computer-based modelling... The systems are comparing management strategies that influence: crop intensity (the number of crops sown per year) by altering soil water thresholds for planting crops; crop diversity by increasing the frequency of break crops and/or legume crops in the sequence; nutrient supply by altering crop nutrient budgets and adding organic amendments; and integrated practices such as cover crops and pasture rotations to restore or build soil quality...

Intensive livestock industries are rapidly expanding in southern Qld and northern NSW and the by-products can be an attractive source of nutrients for use in broadacre farming systems... While manures and other organic waste materials (eg. sugarcane mill muds, by-products from ethanol plants, municipal biosolids) can provide many benefits to soil health, fertility and crop productivity, there are also a number of issues that growers and advisors need to consider before determining the most effective combination of management strategies to use, and the economic benefits (if any) of making a change to current practices... The paper highlights some of these issues, while providing examples of recent research to look at the roles of feedlot manures in supplying N and P to crops...
