At a Merredin Research Station field day, DAFWA researchers Dr Abul Hashem (left) and Mohammad Amjad explain the effects of lime on reducing annual ryegrass in a wheat/lupin/barley/barley rotation, four years after application of limesand... Western Australian research is showing that lime application not only helps to overcome soil constraints, but can also diminish weed burdens in low pH wheatbelt soils... The trials found the use of lime to achieve (even small) increases in pH significantly reduced the density of annual ryegrass, barley grass and wild radish in that timeframe...

DAFWA’s Craig Scanlan explains the benefits of lime incorporation with cultivation during 2013 field days.. Craig says it is most likely that incorporating lime with cultivation did not lift yields above those achieved with cultivation alone in this first year of the trial because only a small proportion of soil was ameliorated by the one-way plough... Craig says the cultivation response at the Dalwallinu site was driven by the removal of a soil physical constraint (acidity).He says the economic success of incorporating lime with cultivation depends on the implement being able to mix to the depth where the soil constraint occurred...

Anecdotal observations in 2009 indicated that use of lime may improve wild radish control... Gazey and Andrew (2010) have demonstrated that the application of lime increased the biomass of a barley crop and decreased the biomass of annual ryegrass, on large plots with markedly different soil pH profiles, in a long-term lime trial at Kellerberrin, WA... The results obtained so far indicate that lime is slowly moving down the soil profile and it has significantly improved soil pH in the top 10 cm soil...

Grain yield showed a linear relationship to phosphorus uptake.. The opposite occurred for treatments with a continuous wheat history; ryegrass biomass tended to be higher where lime was applied compared to no lime treatments at an equivalent wheat shoot biomass.. Our results indicate that grain yield response to the main treatments and P treatments was driven by growing conditions prior to anthesis...
